Guest Registrations in Spain

We want to help you understand why your identification information (personal data) needs to be provided, how it is used, and what is done to keep it safe.

Why do travellers have to give their personal data?

According to the Spanish government, it is to help keep everyone safe when they visit Spain.

Do children have to give their info too?

Yes, everyone has to share their info, even children. But if children are under 14, the grown-up traveling with will give this info.

What law says this has to happen?

It is a rule from something called the Royal Decree 933/2021 (external link).

What info do you need to share?

When you visit Spain, including the province of Málaga, we, the hosts, have to fill in the following info about you on the Ministry of Interior’s system:

  • What kind of ID you are using (like a passport or ID card).
  • The number on your passport or ID card.
  • A special number on the ID (only for Spanish citizens).
  • Your first name.
  • Your last name.
  • Your second last name (only for Spanish citizens).
  • Your birthday.
  • Where you live (your full address, city, and country).
  • Your phone number or email address.
  • If children are under 14, they’ll also ask how you’re related to each other.

How can you share your info?

You have a few ways to give your info.

  • Use a special tool we provide you: You might use a tool, it is from another company in Spain, that lets you fill in your info yourself. If you use this tool, your personal details will go through the tool and straight to the Ministry of Interior. This is the privacy policy of the company for the use of the tool.

  • Send it to us: You can also share your info directly with us using the messaging feature on the booking platform you used, like Airbnb or Booking.com.

You can pick whichever way is easier for you!

What happens if a guest doesn’t give their info?

If a guest doesn’t share their info, we won’t be able to send it to the Spanish Ministry of Interior, which is a legal rule in Spain.

This could cause two problems:

  • The booking might be canceled: We might have to cancel your stay because they are not allowed to let you stay without submitting your info.

  • The host could get in trouble: We could face legal problems because we didn’t follow the law.

So, it’s super important for guests to share their info with the host in a safe way to avoid any issues and make sure everything goes smoothly for the stay! Please also see our Guest Terms and Conditions for Compliance with Royal Decree 933/2021.

Can I give my info straight to the ministry or the police?

No, we as your hosts have to send it in for you.

What about people I’m traveling with?

If you made the booking, you need to share your info and also info for any children you are responsible for. Other adults with you share their own info and info for the kids they’re responsible for.

Who can see my info?

Only us, your hosts and, if you choose to register with the tool, the service provider in Spain and the Spanish Ministry of Interior can see it.

How is my info kept safe?

  • Only people with the right booking info can access it.
  • The host has to prove it is really them to see the data.
  • Your info is sent to the Spanish Ministry of Interior in a safe, locked-up way.

Where is my info stored, and what happens to it?

Your info goes to the Spanish Ministry of Interior’s system right after check-in within 24 hours at the latest. If you choose to send your info to your host, it is also kept on a safe server in Germany for 3 years. After that, it gets deleted. If you cancel your booking, your info is deleted right away.

What if I think my info isn’t being protected?

You can talk to us, the Spanish Data Protection Agency, or a lawyer to make sure everything is okay.

When do I need to give my info?

You should do it before you check in or within 3 hours after you check in.

Can I share my info directly with the host in person or by email?

Maybe, but you need to check with us to make sure it is okay.

Will my criminal record be shared?

No, your past is private. Only your registration info is sent to the Spanish Ministry of Interior.
